A Norwalk police officer became an impromptu firefighter when he spotted a small house fire in the early hours of the morning on Friday.

Officer Jared Alcorn was on patrol when he noticed the smell of smoke.

"I smelt smoke at 3:50 in the morning, so I thought that was odd," Alcorn said.

After searching the neighborhood, he saw flames lighting up the back deck of a home.

The blaze had not spread very far, but the couple inside was asleep and unaware of the growing danger behind their house.

Before they realized the situation, Alcorn contacted the fire department, woke and evacuated the couple with their pets and called another officer to the scene.

Then, he and his partner took action, fighting the flames themselves.

"He asked me where the garden hoses were, there was one on each side of the house, so he grabbed one and I grabbed the other and just started spraying the fire until the firefighters could get there," Alcorn said.

The pair held off the flames until firefighters arrived, preventing the fire from spreading into the house. There is some damage to the home's exterior from the fire, but the main structure is intact.
